  • Notes
    • James d: 24th July 1934 buried under the name of Naliss aged 66 [DEATH CERTIFICATE], he appears in the 1901 census living at 44 Derwent Street, Ayresome, Middlesbrough oc: General Labourer with Ada & their son William Arthur

James Dixon (Army Number 14087) enlisted in the Royal Veterinary Corp on 21st December 1915 at Woolwich.
21 Oct 1916 he got a "Shoeing Certificate" after attending a course of instruction in Showing at the School of Farriery, Woolwich.
He served until his discharge “no longer physically fit for active service” on 10th March 1919 – on his discharge papers he is described as being 5ft 7”, complexion fair, with blue eyes.

On James’s medal card, obtained from the National Archives, he is listed as having three or possibly four medals:
      • Victory – RAVC/101A
      • British – RAVC/101A
      • SWB List – RAVC/507

      Further investigation needed.

James Naliss otherwise known as Dixon is buried at Wardsend Cemetery, Ecclesall North, Sheffield.
This is an extract of an email I received from the ‘Sheffield Family History Society’ “….the churchyard at St Philip's church was small and filled quickly so they bought land at Wardsend further up the valley and established a cemetery which is known as Wardsend. The cemetery is closed for burials now. It became very neglected and overgrown and the buildings were demolished but some local people have adopted it and made a big effort to clear it up.”

After James’s death Ada continued to live at 71, Pollard Crescent, Southy Green, Sheffield, until her death.
